A Spanish radio show has alleged that the Brazilian star, his agent father and Barcelona's fierce rivals met in Zurich during the ceremony, as his contract talks drag on

RUMOURS: Neymar & Real Madrid hold Ballon d'Or talks

Neymar held talks with Real Madrid while in Switzerland for the Ballon d'Or ceremony, according to Al primer toque

With the Brazilian yet to put pen to paper on a new contract with Barcelona after months of speculation, the radio program asserts that he and his father, who acts as the star's agent, met with members of the Madrid delegation in Zurich during the prize-giving.

The Selecao captain, who finished third behind Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo in the running for the coveted award, is believed to be pushing for his renewal to be resolved as soon as possible.

Madrid, meanwhile, have long been keen to take Neymar to the Santiago Bernabeu and have made no secret of their interest, and it appears they are trying to take advantage of the roadblock in renewal talks to poach the Brazilian.

Barça must give Neymar a pay rise to counter Manchester United and Real Madrid interest

Neymar San Mamés

Neymar Jr. has been at his phenomenal best this season. He has stepped up a notch from last season and taken to creating chances for his teammates as well. He is being tipped as the next Ballon d'Or winner based on current form. This has resulted in him being the fodder for rumour mills. Real Madrid and Manchester United are reportedly interested in the services of the Samba boy and, to be honest, nobody can blame them.

The goalscoring burden will fall on Neymar's shoulders in Barcelona's Copa del Rey clash at Athletic Bilbao.

TOP STORY: City to Pep things up with Neymar?

Pep Guardiola's impending arrival at Manchester City continues to spark a veritable whirl of speculation about which players he might want to sign (as well as those he might be keen to move on) when he gets there.
According to the Mirror, the fanfare that heralded the news of Guardiola's arrival might almost be matched by that generated by his first signing as City boss -- which could be Barcelona star Neymar.
The Brazil captain, though, would cost an eye-watering amount -- the paper emphasises that he has a £145 million release clause in his contract -- but City, of course, are not short of a pound or two these days.
The report quotes former Barcelona and Brazil star Ronaldinho as saying he believes City are more than capable of turning a Neymar move to Manchester into reality.
Ronaldinho says Neymar "has already stated his desire to play for Pep" and describes that as "a big statement, with most people knowing that Pep would be joining Manchester City in the summer."
Adding that City could "pay wages that no other club in Europe has the power to do," Ronaldinho says he would advise Neymar to stay where he is for the time being but adds that if he "wants City and they want him, we know they have the power to make it happen."
But Neymar's father has revealed that the Barca star could have ended up on the other side of Manchester, with United having offered £145.6m for him in the summer.

Lionel Messi and Neymar in Barcelona squad vs. Valencia in Copa del Rey

  • Lionel Messi and Neymar have been named in the Barcelona squad to face Valencia at the Camp Nou in Wednesday's Copa del Rey semifinal first leg, with Dani Alves and Javier Mascherano the only regulars being rested for the game.
  • Messi has suffered no ill-effects from the studs-up challenge which saw Atletico Madrid's Filipe Luis red carded in Saturday's 2-1 La Liga win for theBlaugrana.
  • Neymar is named in the squad less than 24 hours after giving evidence in a Madrid court regarding a case of potential fraud in his transfer to Barca in summer 2013.
  • Confirmation that both were called up to face Valencia, along with fellow South American attacker Luis Suarez, came via a club statement early on Wednesday morning.
  • "Barca head into the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals this Wednesday against Valencia," the statement said. "Luis Enrique's men want to get a positive result to reach a third consecutive final.
  • "For this duel the Asturian coach has called up the following players: Ter Stegen, Masip, Pique, Rakitic, Sergio, Arda, A. Iniesta, Suarez, Messi, Neymar Jr, Bartra, Munir, Jordi Alba, Sergi Roberto, Adriano, Aleix Vidal, Vermaelen and Mathieu. This means that Luis Enrique will not be counting on Bravo, Douglas, Dani Alves, Mascherano, Sandro, nor the injured Rafinha."
  • The game at the Camp Nou kicks off at 9 p.m. local time, with the second leg scheduled for Valencia's Mestalla stadium on Wednesday Feb. 10.
  • Holders Barca have reached the last four of the competition in nine of the last 10 seasons, and qualified to face Valencia by beating Athletic Bilbao 4-2 on aggregate in the quarterfinals.
  • Valencia have got past third-tier Barakaldo, Granada and Las Palmas to reach this stage, and are aiming for a first final since they lifted the trophy back in 2008.
  • The 2016 Copa del Rey final has been set for May 21 -- with the venue to be decided once the two finalists have been confirmed.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi Was Offered Valencia Match Ball, Gave It to Luis Suarez

Barcelona's Lionel Messi Was Offered Valencia Match Ball, Gave It to Luis Suarez

Barcelona ran rampant on Wednesday night as they beat Valencia 7-0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final at the Camp Nou, all but booking their spot in the showpiece.
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were (once again) at the heart of the carnage; the Argentinian scored three and the Uruguayan hit four, leaving the club with a familiar and not unwelcome decision to make: Who takes home the match ball?

65 million euros or no ad

Samarreta

FC Barcelona emissaries in United States, in the perspective to meet potential sponsors for Barça's shirt, have started to work in a first day of contacts with regards to the Super Bowl, according to Xavi Campos in Catalunya Radio's program El Club de la Mitjanit. The goal set by President Josep Maria Bartomeu is the one he wrote in a letter to the delegates: 65 million euros. The rise compared to what Qatar have paid (around 30-35 million euros) is obviously quite significant.
Even so, inside the club "there is confidence but no garanty" to get this price. This is why, according to Xavi Campos, Barça have thought about spending the whole coming season with a clear shirt, without sponsors. Although they're counting on this money (it accounts for approximatively 10% of the income planned next season), the idea is to not sign a contract worth less than the value they indicated and make the most of the 'blank' year to negotiate a new sponsorship. The message coming from the Board is that "no agreement will be signed unless it is the best possible one", says Campos, and that they will not rush it because the financial health of the club is good enough.
In a following analysis, economics specialist Albert Deulofeu noticed that Barça could have trouble reaching their deficit objectives, which is why they could end up having to sell a player.

Lionel Messi scores his 500th goal in Copa del Rey hat trick

Messi
Lionel Messi is Mr. 500. The Argentine scored his 500th career goal during Wednesday's 7-0 dominating win over Valencia in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semifinal action, where he actually bagged a hat trick

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi lead Barcelona in humiliation of Valencia

Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi

\Barcelona gave no quarter to Valencia in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semifinal at the Camp Nou, taking advantage of a passive display from Gary Neville's side to ruthlessly hammer them 7-0. There were eye-catching performances all over the pitch from the Catalans.
Lionel Messi reduced Los Che to 10 men, won a penalty and scored a hat trick in another one of his great individual showings, but the Argentinean's escapades up front were rivaled by one of his forward teammates. That man was Luis Suarez, who scored four goals, played a key part in the build-up to two more, and was consistently selfless in creating chance after chance for his companions. He now has 35 strikes in 33 games for Barca this season.
Just as impressive was Sergio Busquets, who was perfect in his decision making over the course of 90 minutes. Carrying out a midfield masterclass, the pivot repeatedly split Valencia in half with his passing, and when asked to win the ball his timing was also impeccable.
Other honourable mentions go to Andres Iniesta, who was constantly involved in attacks during his 45 minutes on the pitch, and Jeremy Mathieu, who was authoritative any time Valencia tried to break.

Pep Guardiola's move to Manchester City to threat Barça's dominance

When the rumors about Pep Guardiola going to Manchester City started to sprout up a few weeks ago, Cules were given the opportunity to consider how their former manager’s move to England could affect Barcelona. While Guardiola’s impact on potentially signing Lionel Messi, finally leading Manchester City to victory against Barcelona in the Champions League and snatching up some of La Masia’s youngsters has already been documented here, it seems that the summer transfer window will be the first real opportunity for the new Man City man to punish his old club.
When looking up and down Manchester City’s roster there doesn’t appear to be a great deal of players that fit Guardiola’s style. Although Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben weren’t necessarily his type of players either, the Catalan was able to use their skills to complement Robert Lewandowski, a prototypical forward in the center of the attack.
City’s problems begin with the defense and seemly go straight through the spine of the team. While it is only conjecture, there is a growing consensus amongst the media about which players will likely thrive and which players for City will falter.
In the attack, Sergio Aguero is a no-brainer to succeed under Guardiola. With his likenesses to Messi, the new manager may be able to somehow take the Argentine to an even higher level. Aguero’s success, however, is all based on his health, and Guardiola’s pressing style may not be favorable for the Argentinean's unceasing muscle issues.
David Silva is another player who should keep his place in City's starting XI, as his comparisons to midfield players currently plying their trade at Barcelona make him the prime candidate for being the lynchpin of any year one success for Guardiola.
Samir Nasri and Kevin De Bruyne should fit nicely when they recover to full fitness, and Raheem Sterling and Kelechi Iheanacho are two young players that Guardiola will hope not only adapt to his style, but can thrive in it. Wilfried Bony is a wild-card, but will most likely need to find playing time elsewhere.
The center of defense is the other area where Guardiola may not need to do much work in the transfer market. Bringing Vincent Kompany back next season healthy, along with Nicolas Otamendi and Eliaquim Mangala in reserve is a good place to start, and any additions would only enhance the competition.
While Joe Hart is not Manuel Neuer, he is still a world-class keeper and it should be assumed that Guardiola would like to keep him between the posts for at least his first season in charge as a veteran voice at the back along with Kompany.
Nevertheless, the center of the park and the outside backs is where the speculation lies. Guardiola will need to get accustomed to preparing his team for the physical rigors of the Premiere League, an adjustment easier said than done. Of Yaya Toure, who is most likely to leave before the new manager ever arrives, Fabian Delph, Fernandinho and Fernando, it is anyone’s guess which players will remain on the Manchester books and will fit into Guardiola’s plans.
Likewise, the quartet at the back of Gael Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta, Bacary Sagna and Aleksandar Kolarov, all four of which are over 30 years old, may need to prepare for their next move if, as expected, they are not wanted at the Etihad next season.
All of the uncertainty with the roster coupled with a reported €200 million transfer budget is what may trouble Barcelona and Bayern Munich. As previously seen with Thiago Alcantara, Guardiola is not afraid to poach his former teams for talent, and the largest budget that he has ever had to work with will mean that he can take liberties with his wish list.
While poaching Barcelona for the likes of Messi or Neymar will be difficult, Claudio Bravo, who has already been linked as a target, or someone like Sergi Roberto would be much more plausible. Bayern Munich would feel similar in that, while Thomas Muller or Manuel Neuer would be tough to pry away, the Austrian David Alaba, another player already linked as a target, may be a little easier to capture. Lewandowski’s transfer road appears to run through Madrid, but City snagging the Polish striker could severely tip the balance of power in the Champions League.
More realistically, however, sporting director Txiki Begiristain and Guardiola could foil Barcelona’s summer plans. Some of the other players that have now been linked with Guardiola’s new City are Athletic Bilbao’s Aymeric Laporte, Everton’s John Stones, Paris Saint Germain’s Marco Verratti and Juventus’ coveted Paul Pogba. These four players are also known to be wanted by Barcelona, particularly Pogba, who has been heavily rumored with every club in the world that can pay his €80 million transfer fee.
Pep Guardiola is facing a challenge at City that he has not known before. He is inheriting the least talented first team squad that he had so far, though to be fair the other two were Barcelona with Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez and a Bayern Munich side coming off a Champions League trophy.
Barcelona may not have any reason to fear Pep's City side in the short-term, and most Cules still root for Guardiola to succeed due to his contributions in Catalunya as a player and coach.
Nevertheless, Barcelona fans should keep a close eye on their former manager during the summer transfer window. He may not be able to overtake Barcelona next year, but signing their most sought-after transfer targets could lead to a new threat down the road.

Who should kick penalties in Barça according to statistics?

  • Neymar

  • Neymar missed another panalty last Wednesday against Valencia. He has missed 4/8 shots this season so far. His non-running technique is not working and this time he sent the ball against woodwork. In total, FC Barcelona shot 14 penalties and missed 6 this season. Messi missed 2/4 and Luis Suárez has a 100% accuracy, 2/2. With this panorama, the penalty kicks has become the only pending subject in which FC Barcelona can improve.

ANALYTICS. Busquets' remarkable game

Busquets
  • "Sergio Busquets' game deserves to be shown again and again to all of us who want/try to play in this position.Idol". This is how ex-blaugrana footballer Marc Crosas, defined on Twitter Busquet's incredible performance in the Valencia game. The midfielder had one of his best games dominating the whole game, leading the suffocating pressure of Barça and creating chances for the teammates. A 10 out of 10 game for one of the key components of Luis Enrique's Barça.

Filipe Luis banned three matches for his challenge on Messi

The Competition Comitee has banned Filipe Luis with three matches for his challenge on Leo Messi during the match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Filipe received a straight red card before half time for his terrible action on the Argentinian striker.
Fortunately, Leo Messi didn't get injured. The Comitte considered it was a "violence challenge" and that's why they banned Filipe Luis with 3 matches rather than the usual 2.

Guardiola chose Manchester City

The suspense has come to an end. After many weeks of wild guesses, interrogations and legitimate suppositions, Pep Guardiola finally decided which team he would coach next season, after three years at Bayern Munich.
This team is Manchester City. Premier League champions in 2012 and 2014, Citizens announced through an official communicate today they would let Manuel Pellegrini go at the end of the current 2015/2016 season only to replace him with the Catalan manager. Guardiola will start at Manchester City on July, the 1st.

Between failure and success:

RONALD DE BOER (98/99)

As a good twin brother, Ronald wanted to follow Frank in Catalonia to wear Barça’s shirt. Unfortunately for him, his trajectory was not as successful, far from being a total failure either. He only stayed 2 years at Camp Nou, playing only 4 games on his debut season, and 31 the following years, being used in almost every Champion’s League game. Unsatisfied with the course of things in Barcelona, Ronald signed for Glasgow Rangers in the transfer window of the 2000/01 season.

Failures:

DEMETRIO ALBERTINI (SEASON 2004/05)

Arrived from Atalanta aged 33, Demetrio Albertini wanted to end his career on a high note. He chose Barça to do so. Unfortunately for him, in a very highly competitive midfield, with Deco, Ronaldinho, Gerard, Xavi and Thiago Motta, it was hard to get game time. He only played 5 games and was crowned La Liga champion before to retire. Although it was a nice way to close the trophy cabin, it was not his best season.

MAXI LÓPEZ (SEASON 2004/05)

Maxi Lopez lived a similar situation, except for how old he was when he joined the blaugrana team. López was 20 years old when he joined Barça, hoping to launch his career in Europe after a promising start in Argentina with River Plate. Too young and too soft for La Liga, he only stayed 1 year and a half before to be loaned out to Mallorca and eventually sold to FK Moscow. During his time at Camp Nou, he played 18 games and scored 1 goal, in the last 16 round first leg of the Champion’s League against Chelsea.

IBRAHIM AFELLAY (SEASON 2010/11)

Now at Stoke City, Ibrahim Afellay once was one of Europe’s most promising talents. So much that Pep Guardiola wanted him in his squad. What really killed his blaugrana career were injuries. After a respectable first season, in which he was used as a supersub (28 games, 10 in the starting line-up, 18 as a substitute), and gave an assist to Messi in Champion’s League semi-final against Madrid, Afellay suffered a minor hamstring before suffering a bigger cruciate ligament injury, meaning he was out for 7 months. He never really could reach the required level to play at Camp Nou and was successively loaned out to Schalke (2012/13), Olympiakos (2014/15) before to join Stoke City.

JOSÉ MANUEL PINTO (SEASON 2007/08)

It was undoubtedly a better choice for him than for Barça. Maybe Pinto could have had a career as a starting goalkeeper in many 2nd or 3rd tier clubs in Europe. But he chose to stay at Camp Nou instead. Firstly he was on loan from Celta Vigo and played 3 games for Barça in the season 2007/08. And Blaugranas decided to sign him. He played 86 more conceding 74 goals (8 in his 3 first games). Eternal substitute to Victor Valdes, he left Barça and retired aged 40 in July 2014 after losing La Liga title to Atlético.

A strange case:

JUAN PABLO SORÍN (2002/03)

2002/03 Barça’s defense was probably not the best in the history of the club, despite the presence of Frank de Boer, Carles Puyol or Michael Reizinger. That is one reason why the Board wanted a left-back in the winter transfer window. His name would be Juan Pablo Sorín. Coming on a loan from Cruzeiro, the Argentine played 15 games with Barça, scoring one goal against Celta. Despite his good performances, Barça let go of him and he went to Villarreal, nearly reaching the Champion’s League final against…Barça in 2006. Arsenal was on his road. He went back to Cruzeiro after two years in Hamburg and retired.
It is very uneasy to make of a winter reinforcement a great signing. Generally, players are being loaned out and may not be as involved as they are when they sign a contract. For the few successes clubs have registered, there were many failures. Including for Barça. Nolito could have been a good addition – we might never know – but he could have been a bad one. Better safe than sorry.

EDGAR DAVIDS (03/04)

Some decisions seem very obvious afterwards. Edgar Davids was one of them. Barça was struggling at 9th place after a very dodgy first half of the season. Juventus let go of Davids on a paying loan to Catalonia. It was the start of a great recovery for the Blaugrana club led by other Dutchman Frank Rijkaard. From 9th place Barça went to 2nd and clinched a direct qualification to the following Champion’s League edition. More than his 18 games (1 goal, 1 assist), it was his attitude and his spirit that lead Barça to only lose 2 games in the second half of the league. After his job was done, Davids went back to Italia.

FRANK DE BOER (98/99)

After a thrilling World Cup in which Netherlands finished fourth, Frank de Boer went back to Ajax at the beginning of the 1998/99 season. After 6 months with the Netherland’s Eredivisie champions, the Dutchman signed for Barça in January. The right choice for the defender as Ajax didn’t make it in the Champion’s League qualifying spots, while Barça ended up being champions in La Liga. After that, de Boer totalled 179 games, 8 goals, 2 assists and 1 red card only. A good memory for Barça fans. He remained at Barça until the 2002/03 season.

Transfers: Careful with the winter window

Nolito

In the end, Barça decided not to sign Nolito, unable to find a solution to avoid a big transfer fee. Although Barça’s decision was based on the economic side of the transaction purely, some risks they took in the past were successful, others ended up being really disappointing. Beware of the winter transfer window.

The abysmal differences between La Liga and Premier League

Fitxatges Norwich
Economic differences between British Premier League teams and Spanish La Liga teams keep growing. During this winter transfer window we could witness, once again, the domination of Bristish clubs at the time of signing footballers.
One figure shows it very clearly: Norwich City on their own spent more millions on signings (32) than the whole of La Liga teams put together (31.6).
In total, 236 million euros have been invested in new signings in the Premier League. The most expensive ones were that of Imbula from Porto to Stoke (24 million euros), that of Oumar Niasse from Lokomotiv Moscow to Everton (18 million euros) and that of Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea to Newcastle (16 million euros).
On the other side of the scale, in La Liga, Barça weren't able to sign the footballer Luis Enrique had asked for in this winter transfer window, the winger Nolito, for 18 million euros. Zidane's Madrid didn't invest anything either on transfers but it is expected for them to have a lively summer transfer window, since afterwards they will have to spend a year without signing because of FIFA's sanction.

Valentí Guardiola: "My son will have to change the mindset of English football"

Valentí Guardiola & Pep Guardiola

After Manchester City announced Pep Guardiola will be next coach next season, his father Valentí was interviewed by BBC, where he talked about his son.

Goal

  • "He will look to carry on the football of his Barcelona and Bayern teams."
  • "Winning, winning. That is what drove him. Winning but also playing football in a certain way, because at the clubs he was at his style changed the way the team played."

  • "Passing, passing, passing then at the right moment, bam, in the goal! None of the long-ball stuff. He never liked that."
  • "He has this attitude to football [as an art form.] Not just to win, but to win in a distinctive way that entertains the public."
  • "The style of football I see in England, I doubt he has that in mind I mean, the football is very different. For that reason, I think he will have to change the mindset of English football."

Future

  • "I think he will be happy - he wouldn't be leaving if not. Right now in Germany, he is held in very high esteem."
  • "He was born for football. He liked everything - cinema, theatre - but he lived and lives for football."

  • "He has always been a leader. Even when he was playing with his contemporaries as a kid, he was the one orchestrating things, taking the lead. We didn't know where this instinct came from, with him being so young."
  • "They can expect to see someone with great humanity. They will be very happy because he has never disrespected anyone, he is very well-mannered and polite."
  • "They can be sure that 24 hours a day he will be focused on football - on their next opponents, on tactics. For 24 hours a day he will be looking at ways to bring success to his team. I am certain about that."

Iniesta to Ronaldinho: "What a pleasure to see you again"

Iniesta Ronaldinho

Last night during Mundo Deportivo's Sport Gala a very special reunion took place. The special guest, Ronaldinho Gaúcho, met one of his ex-teammates in Barça: Andrés Iniesta.
The player from La Mancha took a picture with the Brazilian and posted it on social media with this caption: "What a pleasure to see you again. With the aca @10Ronaldinho."

Wenger jokes about Messi

Wenger

While Arsenal are trying to prepare in the best way possible their Champion's League last 16 first leg against Barça at Emirates Stadium, Arsene Wenger was asked in press conference about potential reinforcements and last minute transfer to expect in London. He then assured there would not be any more transfer moves at Arsenal - except for Debuchy - unless a very special someone was to knock on the door...

Messi: "Hearing people saying I'm the best makes me very proud"

Barça Magazine joined Leo Messi with 5 captains from some of La Masia teams and the club recorded the talk between them, with the presence of Messi's fifth Ballon d'Or, which you can watch on the video.
Juanma García, Arnau Comas, Àlex Rico, Pablo López and Pau Prim were able to ask two questions to Messi. Here are some of the most interesting answers:

La Masia
  • “You are very lucky to be in a club like this.”
  • “This is a rare opportunity not only in football, but in life. Barça gives you the chance to study, to grow and to get an education. I think it’s important for you took make the most of all this and then to enjoy your football and be as professional about it as you can.”
Living in La Masia
  • “It was hard for me because it was such a big change.”
  • “I left a lot behind in Argentina and unlike other children living at the Masia, I hardly ever got to visit my family. I only saw them once or twice a year and that was very hard for me.”
Professional challenges
  • “This club always aims to win and I want to end my career having won as many titles as possible.”
The best player ever
  • “Just to hear people saying and thinking that makes me very proud indeed. But I try not to think about it too much and just focus on enjoying everything that I have in this life."

ANALYTICS. Barça's 'Best XI' have played 4,955 more minutes than last season

Onze gala

One of the keys of the team that won the treble last season is that they reached the end of the season in a very good physical level. Luis Enrique started the championship with many rotations, with good substitutes like Xavi or Pedro. The absence of important injuries also allowed to manage the amount of minutes for each player, so they could reach the end of the season, when titles are won, in good shape.
